Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Well-Being, we are seeking a Health Education Specialist - Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) .


The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) Practice Group provides holistic services that are accessible, inclusive, equitable, and high quality to foster a proactive, supportive culture and enhance students? and trainees? experience at Johns Hopkins University while preparing them to lead fulfilling personal and professional lives. Our integrated service delivery model provides dynamic health promotion and well-being support and programming, student disability services including guidance and resources, and in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support through phone and online resources to JHU learners across all schools within the University.

This position is a full-time position in the Homewood & East Baltimore offices with a requirement for availability to travel to other Baltimore area campuses and the DC campus for program delivery and in-person meetings when necessary. This position's central office will be at the Homewood campus and has a hybrid option (at least four days in-person, which may vary during the year and cycle of work).


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Outreach & Education

  • Aid in the implementation and assessment of a comprehensive prevention strategy for AOD use/misuse for the University using national best practice guidelines and contemporary research.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a range of educational interventions around AOD topics of community relevance.
  • Participate in recruitment, training, and oversight of AOD peer educators and interns.
  • Consult and advise on the sober party registration processes with campus partners, which may include developing, maintaining, and assessing educational content and advising/supervising AOD peer training student groups.
  • Conduct educational programs on health and well-being issues as needed for specific student groups, such as residential advisors, athletic teams, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and other student organizations.
  • Utilize best practices for holidays/events that are associated with an increased risk for substance use, including planning and assessing education and programming.
  • Develop evidence-based and evidence-informed campaigns using various mediums to address college health issues.


Collaboration & Partnership

  • Serves as the point of contact for 10 schools for AOD issues and topics within Health Promotion and Well-Being and assists staff to integrate AOD concepts and education with the elements of well-being.
  • Collaborate closely with student service and academic departments at the various schools to develop well-being campaigns and programming.
  • Partner with campus stakeholders, student organizations, and community organizations to address the unique needs of the student population as it relates to AOD, including consultation and training.
  • Meet with students and trainees, voluntary or sanctioned by Student Conduct, to conduct harm reduction and motivational interviewing meetings.
  • Develop and produce education, advertising, and marketing materials in both print and digital formats in partnership with JHU & SHWB communications colleagues to enhance outreach and marketing efforts and reach.

Administration

  • Complete administrative tasks such as ordering materials, maintaining educational resources, and scheduling rooms for events.
  • Serves as a contact and attendee for internal and external committees (e.g., AOD working group, Maryland Collaborative)
  • Maintain active participation in local/national organizations related to college health and AOD.
  • Assist with surveys, data collection, and other types of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Serves as the point person to complete the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Biennial Report, Opioid Education, and other reports as needed.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of innovative presentations and programs based on sound public health principles and evidence-based practices.
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule. Nights and weekends may be needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, presenting, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with and creating content/presentations/workshops/training that will engage a diverse student population
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with a diverse population.
  • High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • As a university-wide position, staff must be available to travel to JHU campuses in the Baltimore and DC regions.
  • Working knowledge of prevention, health promotion, and behavior change theories.
  • The ability to work as a collaborative team member with students, faculty, and staff throughout the campus community.
  • Familiarity with best practices in college health promotion, including those specific to alcohol and other drug use.
  • Experience in health promotion or university health and well-being is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with BASICS and/or motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with AOD issues in institutions of higher education, as well as specialized expertise and knowledge of the effects of substance use and its intersections across well-being.






Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Credentials as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).




Preferred Qualifications

  • Master?s Degree in public health, health education, health promotion, social work or a related field.
  • Certified Public Health (CPH), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or Substance Abuse Specialist credentialed.
