Position Summary Information
The Athletic Chaplain will assist the Director of Discipleship in ministering to the CBU community by developing ministry strategies for the athletic community at CBU. This position works within the Spiritual Life Office, whose mission is “investing in lives to develop followers of Christ.” They will direct the maturation and equipping of students, staff, and faculty with a concentration on the spiritual development of student-athletes and coaches by performing the following duties. This is a 40 Hour/11 Month position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Develop, supervise, and provide spiritual leadership for a comprehensive ministry strategy among those engaged in Athletics at CBU.
  2. Develop and implement biblical and gospel-centered equipping and training of students in evangelistic methods.
  3. Mobilize and train students to engage in ministry through Spiritual Life.
  4. Actively develop chaplaincy opportunities for athletic teams at CBU.
  5. Function as a liaison between Spiritual Life and Athletics to strategically partner and champion their mission of “Honoring Christ through excellence in Athletics.”
  6. Assist the Director of Discipleship in the continued development of discipleship structures that promote spiritual formation of the CBU community.
  7. Attend and support athletic events, with the possibility of traveling with teams, if needed and desired by coaches.
  8. Develop students’ spiritual literacy, including Biblical Christian faith and practice, and Baptist perspectives.
  9. Plan and direct campus ministry events related to training and developing disciple-makers who understand a Christian’s role in fulfilling the Great Commission.
  10. Pursue tactful and loving individual ministry towards students who do not follow Christ.
  11. Oversee assessment of discipleship strategies for Spiritual Life.
  12. Maintain active membership in a local Southern Baptist Church.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position could be responsible for assigning work and/or giving direction to part-time Student Workers, in order to complete office work assignments.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Christian ministries, biblical studies, theology, or related field; and one to two years of pastoral or ministerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ordained in a Southern Baptist church
  • Previous experience as a college athlete (D-1 or D-2 preferred)
  • Church, college, or athletic ministry preferred.
