Job Description
The Driver I will transport and/or escort NEMS patients, including participants of PACE and other programs, authorized guests, and deliver interoffice mail (both small and large packages), laboratory specimens, and miscellaneous items between NEMS clinics and associated locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Safely and efficiently transport patients, documents, laboratory specimens, supplies, equipment, and other items to NEMS clinics, various locations, and participants’ homes or community locations as requested by the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), while adhering to scheduled routes and times corresponding to patients’ appointments.
- Follow proper loading and unloading procedures to ensure the security and integrity of interoffice deliveries, including safeguarding badges, keys, and sensitive documents.
- Transport patients to and from physicians and other medical appointments as requested by IDT and in compliance with CA Department of Motor Vehicles, California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations.
- Safely assist participants in boarding and disembarking NEMS vehicles according to the IDT’s Care Plan and ensure their safety using safety belts, wheelchair tie-downs, and other equipment.
- Transport supplies and equipment to and from participants’ homes or other community locations as requested by the IDT.
- Observe and promptly report any safety or behavioral issues, assistance needs, or other factors affecting the quality, timeliness, and safety of passenger transport and material deliveries to the IDT.
- Maintain the vehicle’s First Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher by replenishing supplies as used or replacing them before they expire.
- Ensure NEMS vehicles are in good mechanical condition with clean and presentable interiors and exteriors.
- Recognize and address vehicle malfunctions and safety risks, replenish fuel and other fluids as needed, and immediately report any vehicle problems, malfunctions, incidents, violations, collisions, or at-risk situations to the Supervisor.
- Establish positive rapport with patients, their families, caregivers, and all members of the NEMS care team, including Transportation and network providers.
- Utilize Epic efficiently and serve as a content and workflow expert for resolving issues and proposing solutions.
- Stay current with employment and job requirements by maintaining up-to-date, unexpired driver credentials, including external and State licensure.
- Maintain accurate daily records, vehicle maintenance logs, inspection reports, route details, and fuel records, and support vehicle maintenance appointments.
- Participate in planning and revising daily transportation routes for improved NEMS Transportation efficiency as needed.
- Participates as a member of the IDT, when indicated.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager or supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required or minimum of 1 year of commercial driving experience can be substituted.
- Valid CA driver’s license with a clean record (no violations within the last 5 years).
- Must pass 10-panel drug screening, blood alcohol and DOT physical tests upon hiring.
- Documentations of Basic Life Support and First Aid (from accredited organizations) are required within 90 days of hire.
- Must be able to operate mid to large size vehicles and possess general automobile mechanism knowledge.
- Must be able to work Monday through Friday rotational Saturday’s flexible schedule.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal directions.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with staff and patients/participants and provide excellent customer service.
- Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team to network with other drivers and NEMS staff.
- Knowledge of body mechanics for assisting patients or persons with mobility limitations preferred.
- Knowledge of working with special-needs populations, including individuals with Dementia preferred.
LANGUAGE:
- Must be able to fluently speak, listen, minimum read, and write English.
- Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin) preferred.
- Fluency in other languages is an asset.
STATUS:
This is an FLSA Non-exempt position.
This is not an OSHA high-risk position.
