The New Mexico History Museum is a statewide educational resource, a nationally significant local landmark, and destination for anyone who wants to understand the diverse experiences of the people of New Mexico, the dynamics that have shaped our state, and the relationships that connect our region with the rest of the world. The Native American Artisans Program (Portal Program) is administered by the museum aimed at supporting and promoting the work of Native American artisans. The program is mandated by state regulation (NMAC 4.51.57) to operate in a transparent, accountable, and equitable manner.

Why does the job exist?

The Portal Program is one of the New Mexico History Museum's legacy programs, which reserves the portal for the display and sale of arts by members of federally recognized Native American tribes, pueblos, or nations located within New Mexico, all of whom display their art for nearly two million tourists each year. In doing so, the Museum continually contributes to the preservation of indigenous culture while providing learning opportunities to the visiting public through direct interactions with Native artists.

The Compliance Coordinator also referred to as the "Portal Coordinator" ensures the Native American Artisans Program (Portal Program) operates in full, transparent, and accountable manner consistent with NMAC 4.51.57 "Governance of the Portal Program at the Palace of the Governors State History Museum." The Compliance Coordinator/Portal Coordinator under the New Mexico History Museum, supports the Native American Artisans Program by overseeing its day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with state regulations, and facilitating communication between program participants, museum staff, and the Portal Committee. This multifaceted role requires a strong understanding of legal principles, regulatory compliance, and cultural competency.
How does it get done?

The Compliance Coordinator/Portal Coordinator oversees the Native American Artisans Program, often interfacing with the Portal Committee, Museum administration, and DCA legal counsel.
